Full assessment and diagnosis
Full assessment and diagnosis as well as individual assessments and evaluations will be offered to program participants and public to fill in the gaps of services provided to persons with intellectual and development disabilities. Licensed professionals will complete evaluations and provide recommendations in the areas of physical, occupational, speech, and behavioral therapies as well as individual and family counselling.
Licensed occupational therapists will assist people with physical, sensory or cognitive disability to become as independent as possible in various areas of life. They will assess psychological, social, and environmental factors that can affect proper functioning.
Occupational therapists will work on the ability to focus, fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, learning basic tasks like personal hygiene and using utensils, writing or use of computer; they will also focus on positive behavior and dealing with anger. Some tools used during therapy include but not limited to: sensory tools such as cushions, gel pads, play dough, music, visual aids; socialization tools such as conversation cards, adapted writing tools, hand weights; focusing tools such as slide readers, focusing games, reading pointers, timers; oral tools and adaptive utensils; flash cards, time tables and task charts, etc.
Extensive evaluation of speech ability and problems will be conducted with the help of Preschool Language Scale-5 (PLS-5), Clinician Evaluation of Language Fundamentals Fifth Edition (CELF-5), Clinical Assessment of Articulation and Phonology-2 (CAAP)-2, Goldman-Fristoe Test of Articulation 3 (GFTA-3) and Moving Across Syllables (not standardized). If standard methods of treatment of speech impairments and articulation problems are not successful, communication devices can be introduced as well as acquirement of sign language.
Behavior therapy/Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)
Behavioral therapy with focus on inappropriate and undesirable behaviors using ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) and other methods. The use of behavior modification technics will allow for replacing bad and harmful behaviors with healthier and more desirable ones.
Participants will be offered an opportunity to express their feelings and frustration in a therapeutical environment with a licensed professional who will be able to examine the situation, listen, reflect and help them understand the situation and how to deal with it appropriately.
